What It Is

Forza Horizon 6 is an open-world racing game set in Japan, the most requested location in franchise history. Playground Games built the franchise's largest map to date, with Tokyo serving as the centerpiece: five times larger than any urban area in previous Forza Horizon titles. The city spans neon-lit downtown streets, suburbs, industrial docklands, and iconic landmarks like Shibuya Crossing and Tokyo Tower.

The game launched with over 550 real-world cars, all extensively customizable. Players start as tourists and work their way up through the Horizon Festival ranks using the wristband progression system from the original Forza Horizon. Reaching the gold wristband unlocks Legend Island, a special area with unique challenges and exclusive races. Beyond racing, players can build a Valley Estate in the mountains, collect and display cars across eight garages, join car meets, participate in touge battles, and create custom events with EventLab.

The Eliminator, a 72-player battle royale mode first introduced in Forza Horizon 4, returns. The game also features a dynamic weather system with seasonal changes that dramatically impact the landscape, from cherry blossom blooms during Sakura season to snowy mountain passes.

What We Know

Development: Forza Horizon 6 was developed by Playground Games with assistance from Turn 10 Studios, who shifted entirely from supporting Forza Motorsport (2023) to helping polish this title. It runs on Turn 10's in-house ForzaTech engine and is the first Forza Horizon game built exclusively for ninth-generation consoles, leaving behind the Xbox One. The team hired cultural consultant Kyoko Yamashita and traveled to Japan to research car culture firsthand, capturing the urban street racing scene and Daikoku car meets.

Reception: The game received critical acclaim, scoring 90/100 on PC and 91/100 on Xbox Series X|S on Metacritic, with a 100% recommendation rate on OpenCritic. Individual outlet scores include Destructoid (9/10), Eurogamer (5/5), Game Informer (9.25/10), GameSpot (8/10), GamesRadar+ (4/5), and Giant Bomb (5/5). Steam reviews are Very Positive, with 84% of 72,423 reviews positive and 86% of English-language reviews positive.

Sales: Forza Horizon 6 was a commercial powerhouse. It sold over 500,000 copies via Steam pre-orders alone (nearly $30 million in gross revenue) a month before launch. During early access, it hit 172,093 concurrent players on Steam, more than doubling Forza Horizon 5's peak and setting a franchise record. It reached 6 million players by May 21 and 300,000 concurrent players by May 24, making it the 52nd highest all-time peak on Steam.
