Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 Is Out Now: Time to Lead Your Marine Squad Into the Hive

Grab your pulse rifle, Marine. Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 launches today on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, Cold Iron Studios' sequel to the 2021 co-op third-person shooter that turned the Aliens universe into a Left 4 Dead-style survival gauntlet. The headline change is a big one: squads grow from three players to four, and the xenomorphs are smarter, faster, and more numerous than ever. At a time when co-op shooters are a crowded field, this is Cold Iron's bid to make the definitive Aliens fireteam experience.

What Is Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2?

Fireteam Elite 2 is a cooperative third-person survival shooter set in the Aliens universe, the direct sequel to Cold Iron's 2021 cult hit. You are a Colonial Marine deployed to the Storr Boon's Mining Facility on the planet LV-558, fighting through 15 missions across four distinct biomes against a wide variety of enemies: xenomorphs, hostile synthetic androids, and everything in between. Each mission puts you in a fireteam of four, backed by AI teammates if you queue solo, and success depends on sticking together and covering each other as the swarm closes in.

The original, released August 24, 2021, was something of a sleeper success. It shipped to a Mostly Positive to Very Positive reception on Steam, holds a Metacritic in the mid-70s across platforms, and has drawn over 21,000 user reviews since. Its blend of tight co-op, weapon customization, and unapologetic Aliens fan service earned it a dedicated player base. This sequel is Cold Iron's answer to the biggest complaint about that game: it was built around a three-man squad, which capped how chaotic and cooperative the action could get.

What's New: Four Marines, Not Three

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 - Squad Up

The biggest structural change is the jump from three players to four. Cold Iron says the fourth slot opens up far more ability combinations, and it forced the team to rethink how much is happening on screen. With four times the assets and enemies to manage, the director describes the implementation as a constant challenge to keep the "attention economy" of each player from collapsing into chaos.

In practice, that means wider encounters, more enemies on screen, and classes that are designed to feed off each other. The original's tight, corridor-scale firefights have been scaled up into set pieces that can swing from calculated tension to a desperate last stand in seconds.

Five Classes Plus the Specialist

At launch there are five core classes, each with a distinct tactical role:

  • Duelist - close-quarters melee specialist built around stun batons for desperate, up-close moments.
  • Machinist - deploys stationary turrets to lock down sightlines and hold ground.
  • Marauder - the aggressive front-line brawler.
  • Hunter - lays electric traps to slow and damage enemies.
  • Medic - keeps the squad alive through the swarms.

On top of those sits the Specialist, a fully customizable sixth class that lets you mix and match major and minor abilities from every other class. Want a Machinist's turret on a Medic? You can build exactly that. It is the class designed for players who want their loadout tuned to a specific squad role, and it is where most of the deep customization lives.

Elemental Ammo and a Three-Weapon Loadout

Combat has been expanded in two ways that matter. First, there are now four elemental ammo types (fire, cryo, electric, and piercing), each tuned to exploit the weaknesses of different enemies. Electric ammo pairs naturally with the Hunter's traps, while fire is your friend when the xenomorphs start overrunning a corridor. Second, you now carry three weapons at once: a primary, a sidearm with infinite ammo for those reload moments, and a Signature weapon such as a smart gun, flamethrower, or rocket launcher. Each can be further customized with attachments and traits, so builds have real depth.

Smarter Xenomorphs and a Horde Mode

Cold Iron worked closely with 20th Century Studios on new alien designs, and the sequel's xenomorphs are described as more ferocious and more varied than the original's. They ambush from vents, flank, and swarm in overwhelming numbers, which means situational awareness is everything. Friendly fire is enabled on higher difficulties, and a new crouch mechanic gives you options for staying low and out of the crossfire.

Fireteam Elite 2 also launches with multiple dedicated horde maps that push squads to their limits through escalating waves, earning increasingly valuable rewards the deeper you survive. Combined with 15 story missions and the four biomes, there is a solid amount of content at launch, and the team has confirmed launch-day DLC packs featuring outfits and weapons inspired by Ellen Ripley, Herk Mondo, and Rain Carradine.

It's Hard to Beat Aliens and Left 4 Dead...

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 - It's not just xenos that are after you.

This Aliens game checks all the right boxes for a match made in heaven. Here are some of the reasons this one should be a winner.

The four-player squad. The original was already at its best in the most chaotic firefights, and four players is exactly the right upgrade to push that further. More marines means more enemies, more ability combos, and more moments where a single mistake snowballs into a full retreat.

The Specialist class. Class-mixing loadouts are a great answer to the "who plays the medic" problem. The ability to fold a damage ability into a support build means every squad can find a composition that fits, and it rewards experimenting beyond the five core classes.

Launch-day cross-play. Getting four friends together across Steam, Epic, PS5, and Xbox on day one is a real feature, not a footnote. Co-op shooters live and die on population, and removing platform barriers at launch is exactly the right call.

Where to Play

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 is available today on Steam, the Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. A Switch 2 version follows in Q3 2026. Cross-play and voice chat are supported at launch across PC and consoles.
